2024 Winners

The Mercury Club is proud to announce the winners of this years’ Hy Truman/Donald Goldberg and Hy Truman/Rae Kleinbaum Memorial Awards. Branson Appelman is the 88th male winner and Rose Neuman is the 37th female winner. 

Branson Appelman

Branson Appelman is the 88th male winner of the Hy Truman-Donald Goldberg Memorial Award.  He has always wanted to play hockey at the highest level and because he lives in Maple Grove, Minnesota, he had to leave the state to do so.  Minnesota High School rules do not allow a player to play AAA hockey and high school hockey at the same time.  His junior high years were spent in Omaha, NE, and his high school years were spent in St. Louis, MO. playing AAA hockey.  Every school year he would leave home to play both high school and AAA hockey.  In the summer he would return home to train.  He also found time to play Lacrosse in the spring.  He was an all-state goalie, captain of his team and compiled a 92-36 record in four seasons at the AAA level.  He was also a Silver Medalist representing the USA at the 2022 Maccabiah Games in Israel.  In addition, he was also an excellent student with a high school GPA of 4.1 out of 4.0.  He will play Junior A hockey this coming year in St. Cloud and eventually hopes to play Division 1 hockey at the Air Force Academy. 

Rose Neuman


Rose Neuman is the 37th female winner of the Hy Truman-Rae Kleinbaum Memorial Award.  She was the captain of her Eden Prairie fast pitch softball team and was one of the reasons her team made it to this years’ State Tournament.  Unfortunately Rose broke her finger and needed surgery in the game before the tournament and was not able to play.  Rose led her team in home runs and RBIs.  She was selected to the Lake Conference All Conference team.  Rose is an AP Scholar with a 4.0 GPA and will be attending the University of Michigan in the fall.  Finally, Rose is a Sunday School volunteer at the Bet Shalom Congregation.

The Mercury Club is celebrating its 103rd anniversary and is proud to announce this year’s winners of what is believed to be the longest running Jewish scholar-athlete award in America.  Jacob Rothman from Hopkins is the 87th winner of the Hy Truman/Donald Goldberg Memorial Award and Maya Mor from Minnetonka is the 36 th  winner of the Hy Truman/Rae Kleinbaum Memorial Award.  Both will receive $1000.00 scholarships from the Marvin Wolfenson family and the Mercury Club. Jacob Rothman Rothman was a three-year letter winner on the Hopkins basketball team. The team finished with a season record of 19-9, and Rothman was awarded Honorable Mention for the Lake Conference. He has also been on the A Honor Roll for three years. Rothman will be attending Minnesota State University in Mankato. 2022 Winners

The Mercury Club is celebrating its 102 nd  anniversary and is proud to announce this year’s winners of what is believed to be the longest running Jewish scholar-athlete award in America.  William Silton from Breck is the 86th winner of the Hy Truman/Donald Goldberg Memorial Award and Macy Iyer from Edina is the 35 th  winner of the Hy Truman/Rae Kleinbaum Memorial Award.  Both will receive $1000.00 scholarships from The Marvin Wolfenson Family Foundation. William Silton Silton was a captain of the Breck baseball team. In his senior year, he had a .357 batting average with 18 RBI’s; he had 34 strikeouts in 26 innings pitched; and, he was a first team All-Conference and All-Section selection. Silton also had a very successful junior year where he registered the most wins in the IMAC conference. William was a 3-year letter winner. He plans to play baseball next year at St. Olaf College.
